Mettiamo che questi signori mi stanno facendo delle domande molto interessanti sulla Formula Uno ed Apple. Quindi capiamo un po' il da farsi nei prossimi tempi. What is up, people of the internet?
-
Welcome to the... Wow, I've never done this before. Nice. What is up, people of the internet? Welcome to another episode of the Waveform Podcast, a bonus episode. I, right now, am your host, Ellis, and I am with... I'm David. And I'm Andrew. Wow.
-
All right. I'm David. I'm Adam. And this is officially the second hottest outdoor Waveform Podcast of the year. It is not 100 degrees, but it is very close. Pretty damn close. Almost as hot as in the studio when we don't run the AC. Yeah. I think we train all year for this moment. That's so true.
-
So you're probably asking, where are we? You're probably not asking that because we are in Cupertino . The iPhone event just finished. Marquez and David are in Apple's, like, real campus, getting briefings, shooting the event, shooting the devices, getting hands-on, doing that whole thing.
-
Dapping up speed. Dapping up speed. It just happened. Go watch the VOD. I'm hip. I know what it is. So since we are not actually allowed inside Apple Campus to see anything, we are doing the second ever edition of Waveform Man on the Street, live from Cupertino.
-
And we are just going to poll random people and see what they think about the event, about the iPhone Duo, about that new thermal placing inside the A 20 that lets us directly touch- I thought you were going to say the new CEO who also- Oh, yeah. Yeah.
-
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That happened. Whatever. You know what I mean? It's someone else's turn. So. So. Yeah. First guess? Yeah. Should we find our first victim? Well, we're lucky enough that two people have already shown up. Oh, yeah.
-
And they're returners from last year. So we have to have them on. Who wants to come first? True Waveform superfans may recognize him. His name is? Kavi. Kavi. Welcome back. Thank you. Last time you were here, pretty much all we had to talk about was a video.
-
The vapor chamber and the color orange. Right. Now you're back and there's a ton to discuss. There's a new CEO. There's a whole new device. The watch is in ceramic. I don't know. Whatever. I guess we'll kick it off. How do you feel about the duo?
-
What thoughts are racing through your head about this thing ? I thought it was pretty interesting. I'm really curious to see how durability will hold up and also how hot it's going to get. Yeah. The internals of the phone are in the pill, or a lot of them are. I mean, it really feels like they're doing the iPhone Air Play again, right?
-
Like, it seems like, I haven't gotten to confirming yet, but the battery doesn't have a vapor chamber. It's all-day battery life, but worse than that. Like, it's this new hardware spectacle with potentially not as great specs. Yeah. I forget. Did the main camera on the duo also have, like, that variable aperture thing they brought in on the Pro?
-
No. It did not, which we kept trying to figure out what iPhone camera they plucked for that device. I think Andrew... I think it's the iPhone Air. I think Alex called it. Yeah. Yeah. He was like, this is just the Air's camera plus a telephoto . I guess that makes sense. I think it does make sense because it's the thinner.
-
They're used to doing it on that camera bar. It's almost exactly the same. It's the thinnest iPhone ever, which we all were assuming we were going to get iPhone Air 2X. They, like, lobbed the... They gave it a haircut and made it a little shorter. But it is interesting. I'm wondering what crease will look like.
-
Obviously, they're not going to show a crease in any of the renders of things. But what are your thoughts on price? What were you thinking before you saw the price? And now what are your thoughts of seeing the 1999? I think it's about what I expected. Really? Yeah. I thought maybe it would be a bit more, like, a little more expensive.
-
Like, I don't know, $2,300 or something. Okay. But I'm not shocked to see it here. Really? I am. I'm shocked to see an under two. I mean, add to. Yeah. We all around the office were like, there's no... This is going to be $2,500. It's going to be $2,700.
-
We were expecting, like, a big, big, giant price. Right. You have an interesting perspective. I feel like everyone uses Folds in sort of a different way. There's not, like, one use case. But super fans may remember, you are in flight school pursuing a commercial pilot's license.
-
And last time you were here, we talked about all the different ways people use iPads in the cockpit. Do you think pilots will be using an open iPhone duo in the cockpit? I think it could be really cool to see if, like, ForeFlight , Garmin Pilot, they provide an update to make it work.
-
If they can get it to work, I think the primary concern would, again, be just cooling. iPads already overheat. Like, when you're flying, I don't know, over Bakersfield or something, then come back here. Bakersfield mentioned. Hopefully it's not too much of an issue with the folding phone.
-
But if they can solve that, I don't really think it would be too much. I see it as pretty likely. This might be a dumb question. I'm not a pilot, which should be painfully obvious. When you use an iPad in the cockpit, you also have your phone.
-
Now, if your phone is the tablet, I don't know how often you're potentially using your phone while you're flying a plane. Does that pose an issue? Like, are most people used to not their personal device being the, you know, the tablet or screen for being a pilot ? So now your personal device is being used for that.
-
Is that an issue? I don't think so. The same app, ForeFlight, people can use both on iPad and iPhone. I know some people who would just fly without an iPad and just use their phone. But I think most people would use an iPad.
-
So, no, I don't see it as being an issue if it's, like, both devices being in one. I would have loved for you to tell me that nobody ever looks at their phone while they're flying a plane. But, okay, cool. I hope more people use this. Well, you're primarily looking outside, but, like, instead of an iPad...
-
Primarily, yeah. I wish it was all the time. IFR conditions exist, man. Yeah, it's supervised. We cannot escape the elephant in the room. This was our very first John Ternus hosted event. How do you think he did?
-
I think he did pretty well. I didn't hear a good morning in the beginning. I know. I know. Well, we were wondering if it would be a new thing. He said, hello and welcome. Do we think that is just a... Sorry, I got distracted by something.
-
Now that we're cut. Do we think that was just an intro right now and he's going to keep it? Or do we think this is going to be a stick? I liked it, honestly. Hello and welcome. I'm down. I think it'll be a stick. You think he sticks with it? I think I agree. I probably thought about it.
-
So we didn't... Did anyone see any video of... Because usually they come out on stage and say something. Do we think he said any... He also said hello and welcome? I don't... I missed it. I don't know. Tim Cook has so much... Like, he's able to say so much and also say so little at the same time.
-
Like, his southern accent, this sort of, like, very stern face. And... But it's, like, stern but friendly he puts on. Like, I feel like it's so easy to think about who he is on the inside while watching Tim Cook speak. And I don't get that from John Ternus yet.
-
He sort of just feels like a blank executive. I don't remember what the first Tim Cook one of these was like. But I'm really curious if we'll eventually, like, form this vision. Admiration. The first thing I saw when he came on is I was like, what are those sneakers?
-
Like, what are you... I feel like every tech exec ever has those exact sneakers. I know, except Tim Cook, who always came out with fire. One more thing about the event is this is from... As far as I can remember, the first time we didn't get the base iPhone at all mentioned.
-
We went straight to the Pro. All the rumors are pointing to base iPhone comes out in spring, which is now presumably a second event or a third of it. I don't even know with Dub Dub. Do we think that's weird? Do we think we're just in the new age of, you know, September event is just the big dogs?
-
Although we got random AirPods. I'm confused the more I say it out loud. Yeah, I think it's a little surprising. I'm not sure how many other companies really do that. That's a good... Yeah. Like, Google does the A series later, but Apple's always done the SE or the whatever version E now at a different time.
-
So I guess we're going to get, like, base iPhone E, maybe air in, like, a spring event kind of thing? I'm cool with that, man. As someone who, for the past few years, has had to make what felt like 10 million iPhone videos every September, the fact that I can spread out my year a little bit, you know, maybe we'll get new color.
-
Like, it'll... I don't know. Arguably, the best part about this event was going home and knowing for main channel we only have to make two videos. Like, we might even get to cover AirPods or something. And those two videos are AirPods 5 and Watch. And, you know, Ceramic Watch series. And ceramic watch.
-
Dude, thanks so much for coming on again. It's always a pleasure to see you. We're going to go search the seven Cs for another victim. And by search the seven Cs, he's standing right here because he also came to join our... Dude, I need a towel. I'm sweating so bad.
-
This is great. You better leave that in. We are back with another guest. Still Ellis. Still Andrew. But now we have... Emily. Emily. Thank you very much for joining us. Yeah. You are a unique guest because you say you only watched the first 40 minutes of the event.
-
I did. I sped run it on, like, three times speed as I was driving over here. That's awesome. And what did you think? I think Mr. Turnis did a great job. The handoff was cute. Handoff was cute. I was really hoping they would do the Apple, like...
-
Like, where you touch the phone. The, like, contact sharing. The CEO position would, like, transfer over. But no. I guess... That would be a great use of that feature because I'm not sure that anyone uses that in real life. I've tried to use it. I've tried to use it a lot.
-
And sometimes it even works. My problem with it is you can't select... And I know every time I say I have a problem with tech, someone's like, Ellis, you're wrong. So I know it's going to happen again. But I keep giving... Accidentally giving out, like, really personal information. Because you can't... Because you can't choose what parts of your contact get transferred over.
-
So, like, I'll be doing, like, a random business thing. And then it's like, oh, you have my home address now. Like... But you're sharing your... You are actually trying to share your contact information. Yeah, yeah. But I wish it would just share my name, my phone number, and my email. I'm sure I can change this. And I'm just... It only happens when I, like, stack phones with friends.
-
And then it will accidentally happen. For me, it used to happen all the time. Also, when I wore an Apple Watch, I would accidentally initiate it between my watch and my phone all the time. And it would drive me insane. Okay, back to the event. This is event talk. So you got iPhone 18 Pro.
-
Sure, yeah. Thoughts on the colors? We haven't talked about colors yet. We haven't talked about colors yet. I thought they looked nice. I'm repping the blue 13 Pro Max. So it's kind of reminiscent of... Yeah, it is a really similar blue. I like the burgundy.
-
The burgundy was good. I don't know if my shoes are in shot, but... Oh. Repping the burgundy shoes. They are very... Yeah. So the colors are trendy. I like that they're a little bit more muted, but still, like, really rich and, like, dual-toned. Yeah. The pros were allowed to have fun this year.
-
Yeah. Yeah, finally. Did you say dual-toned or dual-toned? Dual-toned. Okay, because a conversation we were having is... On the 17 Pros, there's sort of this two-tone thing that happens between the glass and the aluminum, and it seemed like this year they're flush.
-
Yeah. Well, they made a big deal about that, that the, like, aluminum and the glass are, like, tone-matched. Yeah. I like my Panda iPhone. I was a little bummed. Well, you guys are caseless, right? This is the first... I thought you said tasteless, and I was like, you're right, but that's a bold thing to say.
-
This is the first phone in my life that's had a case on it. Not in my life, but since, like, middle school, it's had a case on it. Yeah. I don't know why. It's because you didn't care about your Mini, and you finally care about this phone. No, it's because the Mini was indestructible. It was because I think I was planning on trading this in for a fold, and I don't know if that's...
-
Oh, okay. ...still the case. But I bought this phone with the intention of giving it up in a year for... Because I think I bought this, like, right after it came out. No, a few months after. So... Oh, sorry. No, no, you go. Oh, I was going to transition to the fold. That's it. Yeah. She's locked in. All right. Let's see.
-
What was your segue? Oh, no. Come on. You had it. Yeah, yeah. Well, I was just going to ask why you're not really, like, planning on going with the fold now that you've seen the... It's, like, the least tech reviewer reason ever. It's because I really want to buy, like, a turbo, beefcake, Giga Chad MacBook Pro right now.
-
Like, I want a home computer that just, like, chugs. And I just... If I'm going to spend, like, six grand on a computer, I can 't justify adding $2,000 to that for, like, a weird iPad thing. But, dude, the alarm clock...
-
You didn't see the alarm clock thing. Oh, yeah. So what do... Clue us in on what you do know about Duo. So I know it's passport style. I know that's about it. Okay, cool. The rounded corners on the outside corners.
-
On one side. Yeah, on one side. But the other side... We didn't mention that. It's, like, a D, almost. Yeah, it's a D. Which is a D for Duo. I don't know if they meant to do that. This proves that none of you guys listen to me when we're all watching the event together. Probably because I'm talking too much. Wait, did you say that? That is D? Yes, I said it exactly then. I was too locked in. Okay, yeah.
-
It's very squat. It's got curved on the side. It's two cameras. The cameras seem to be from the iPhone Air, like the 48 megapixel fusion wide whatever. And then a telephoto. It is a choice. Battery life, all day. No surprise.
-
Who knows what that means. And then, did you see the price? I did. So I also saw your short where everyone was kind of overs hooting it. Alex was spot on. Yeah? He said $19.99. Yeah. Yes. We're never going to live that down at home.
-
How did they make it so cheap? It must have no RAM. It must just be RAM-less. Well, the cameras. Yeah. It's the AirPlay. It's the iPhone AirPlay, but now just two of them and a haircut because it's way shorter.
-
Which might be the smart move if they want to lower the price to get people to buy it. I agree. But you're kind of losing out on people like Ellis who want the beefy phone, right? No, I don't think I... I don't know. I don't know what I want. Looks to camera.
-
So, question. You're on a 13. Yes. Are you thinking of upgrading soon? Absolutely not. No? No. Okay. I'm planning on riding with this phone until it gets to the state of Ellis' 12 Mini.
-
I do think more people should do that. I feel like treat how we treat cars. Run until they literally won't drive you anymore. We're the worst people to say that because none of us follow those rules. Maybe Ellis a little bit. Not anymore. I will say a piece of advice. Make sure whatever your life is like that financially you 're able to make this a snap decision because as somebody ran a phone into the dirt, one day either the phone will make that decision for you and you won't have a choice.
-
Or one day something will happen that makes you so angry that the only way to cure your anger will be to go and buy a new phone. Right. In that moment. I think for me, I was literally out and about and I was like, no, I'm done. Yeah. I'm done. And I went straight to the Apple store and bought this phone.
-
Yeah. So at least how my phone's running right now, I feel like I got at least another two years. Do you have liquid glass on that thing? No. Okay. Oh, well, yes. Actually, yes, I do. Oh, my gosh. The UI stuff. Yeah. Yeah. That doesn't impact how it runs much, does it?
-
They made it seem like you needed a crazy GPU to do all that light processing. I think the developer beta was like, this thing's not going very well. And then they optimized it a bit better to have that. I don't know. Yeah. But we mentioned before, before we got into the Duo, Alice mentioned standby mode.
-
So the new folding version is kind of sweet. You open it up a little bit, tent it, and now you have this standby. But also, like, the inside screen glows to reflect the colors on the... I'm just wondering if it's going to lock into place, or is it at my nightstand slowly going to open until it goes face first onto the ground?
-
But I thought that was one of those, like, Apple makes folding phone shows that they care a little more than everyone else who's made folding phones and, like, throws some features out people haven't thought of yet. It's a nice touch. I just think, like, and I've said this before, I think standby mode...
-
I forget what it... I think it's called standby mode. It's, like, the coolest feature Apple's ever put in a phone . Like, the fact that your phone is able to just, like, seamlessly integrate with a room. And so the fact that they took it even further, I was just like, this is what I need from them.
-
I do hope they make the hypothetical triangle-shaped upside -down taco wireless charger. That would, like, complete it. Exactly. It would charge from the inside? Somehow. Oh. So they'll figure it out. They've got a mobile... They've got a mobile... Emily's our new host.
-
You don't know what you're talking about. Yeah, they'll figure it out. They've got trillions of dollars, literally. Okay? They'll figure it out. And they didn't make airplay work. Or what is it? Airpower. Airpower. Airpower. Yeah. That's true. But some things are just impossible. But this... But not this thing that I was thought of right now.
-
Yeah. Not this thing. Live translation, maybe. Do you have any final thoughts on... Well, I wanted to ask on what you guys thought of the name. Yes. Because we're familiar with the name. Yes. Thank you. Okay. I think that's why none of us are allowed to like it.
-
Because Microsoft has spoiled the name. But I do think the name makes sense. To the average audience. I will always look at it poorly. Because Duo was one of the worst products that have ever come out. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I kind of wish they had called it a Fold. I wonder if Samsung trade...
-
Like no one else can call it a Fold. It just feels so... No. No. Everyone calls it a Fold except for Apple. What am I talking about? Yeah. What do you think of? I mean, you can't name a folding device the Duo and not... Think of it. Think of it. Yeah.
-
The Surface Duo. But... Apple likes to not think about anyone else. And pretend none of them exist. Yeah. Although they did mention other folding phones a bunch. Which they usually just would be like, This is a folding phone. Mm-hmm. Never done this before. Never seen this before. Yeah. Yeah. That is true.
-
You said that when we were watching it and I didn't clock it. But yeah, they never ever even acknowledged that other companies exist until today. And even today they were just like, Yeah, other... It's there. I don't know. I thought it was interesting that they didn't put a number behind it. Not yet.
-
I guess the Duo 2 is going to be kind of redundant. The Nuo. And then do you think they're going to call it the 2? Or are they going to slide it in like the Pixel Fold did with the rest of the lineup? Oh, like... I think they're going to do it like Nintendo does Mario Bros.
-
And it's just always going to be the new iPhone Duo. Which they've done with iPads for a while. But it doesn't match with the rest of their lineup on phones. And this is clearly a phone. Unless they consider it an iPad. And the iPad stuff is confusing, man. I'm always like, do I have a 9th or a 15th generation iPad? Like, what?
-
Huh. That's a good question. Bets on what you think Duo 2 is going to be called? I mean, the 2 needs to be the Duo Duo. The Duo Duo. The Duo Trio. Duo Trio. Oh my gosh. All right. I'm in.
-
Yeah. I'm in. You might have a career in marketing ahead of you. Oh, really? This is kind of next level. Well. The Duo Quatro. The Duo Quatro. At what point do you reset and then make it the iPhone Trio Uno? And then Trio Duo.
-
When it's three screens. Well, the Trio would be. Apple Trifold confirmed? Question mark. Emily, thank you so much for coming on. Wait, wait, wait. We have one more question. You told us something right before we started. Sure. Which is that you were in Zaragoza at the same time that we were. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-
What were you? I mean, I'm going to take a guess on what you were doing there. What were you doing there? How was your trip? It was amazing. It was amazing. I did not get to explore Zaragoza that much. Okay. I was on a train from Madrid to Barcelona and just watched the eclipse from the train station.
-
Whoa. Yeah. So I was like, I saw your stories all leading up to it. And I'm like, maybe? And then I'm like, oh, they're no. We were pretty quick. I think we got to be in Zaragoza for like 24 hours. Yeah. Yeah. 16 of that was filming and setting up for it. Yeah. Yeah. So.
-
That's funny. That's why I had to come today. That's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Well, thank you so much for joining us. That was awesome. Yeah. Great. We back. We're back. We back. We're back. I'm running out of cool and interesting ways to cue these in. But we are here with?
-
Adrian Santos. My channel name is Tech Santos. I'm a tech YouTuber from Mexico. Sick. Yes. I've been coming to Apple events for, this is my fifth iPhone event. Really? So it's been a while now. I'm starting to be a little bit more veteran, a little bit less scared with all the chaos going on.
-
I mean, it is chaotic. And this is probably a fairly chaotic one because you've got quite a big thing to cover. Yeah. What are your thoughts first? Like, this is a very different vibe. One new CEO. One brand, two brand new device. Two duo new device. A lot of things were different about it.
-
What struck you as the most interesting, the most different ? Definitely the duo. I'm sure everyone's talking about that. But my big question with Apple's first foldable was, what are they going to do different from Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi?
-
Like, they all have foldables, right? Yes. So I'm like, what's Apple going to bring to the table? And I think they nailed it with the software. Especially the, like, moving the little tab to the right where you can, like, access it. Because having a square screen or squarish screen is kind of weird.
-
Because reaching over to the, it's not very comfortable. And just moving it to the side, I thought was brilliant. And I can't wait for everyone else to copy that. That's funny. It also, like, works perfectly because you can be a right dock user on Mac already.
-
And it just, we know what that looks like already. That's true. And then they added the, I forget what it's called. But now, like, notifications and some settings panels are in that right side above, like, all into one now. I think, like, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, all those are in the same. It was pretty obvious software was going to be the thing that they nailed.
-
Yeah, the animation, when you open it and, like, fades into the other screen, that's just, like, so Apple. We just asked our previous guest, does it look as good in person as it did in the event? It does. It does look as good. I tried opening it a couple of times. And I did it, like, slowly to see if it, how it would react .
-
And I actually opened it, like, I don't know, halfway. And if you look from the front side, it's fading out. And if you look from the inside, it's fading in. Like, as you actually open it up, it does that, both animations at the same time. They've done it again. It's nuts.
-
They know how to do it. Do you think it's something that will get old after a while ? Like, do you know how we all like our animations and then we're like, okay, 0.5x speed this. I just need to get stuff done. What? Or do you think it's going to stay? You point, you speed up the animations on your phone because they bore you? You don't?
-
It makes it faster. It makes everything faster. It does make it faster. It makes it faster. Get out of your house. Get out of your house. No, it's not. It's the most Android thing ever. It's so we can watch TikToks faster. Yeah. Like, this isn't. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt you, but sorry.
-
Okay. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Crease? No crease. It's, if you're like really, really picky, you can feel it. Like, I say it's like 95%. You can't feel it, but you can like 5% feel it just a little bit if you're looking for it.
-
But it doesn't, like visually, no crease at all, which is really, really cool. And also, the other thing you were asking about the event, the people. I was recording my video for my YouTube channel. And Speed just starts walking along.
-
We haven't asked anyone about Speed yet. And I turn around, I'm like, yo, Speed. And he turns to my camera and is like, yo, what's up? That was like the coolest moment ever. That's pretty cool. It only happens at Apple events. Yeah. He had a wild amount of viewers on his stream during it. He was live streaming? Yeah.
-
So he was like in a room on the side with a green screen. So he was live streaming, like, you know, cut out over the event going on. And then he was like trying to prove to his audience. I think when we turned it on, it was literally just like him going like, W's in the chat.
-
And we're like, oh my gosh, we're streaming these to a new level of a new. But he wasn't like running and gunning all over the place. It was like sandbox. During the event, he had the event on a green screen behind him. And he was watching. And then he left the room and went out onto the hands-on where you were.
-
I think he like grabbed. He was. The best part of it was he was like practicing what to say to John Turnitz. He was like, yo, what's up? Love the A20. And you just like could tell he like didn't really. Which is so hilarious. I love that he like was getting into it. I know. But that speaks to like Apple's marketing expanding to including different people.
-
And from Mexico specifically, you know Memo Ochoa, the soccer player? I don't. He's a six-time World Cup goalie for Mexico. Oh, I do remember. Okay, yes, yes. You remember the memes about the wall of this guy that was like a. He's been to the World Cup six times.
-
He's one of the most famous soccer players in Mexico. Football. I say soccer because whatever. But he came to the Apple event. Oh, really? I saw him. I got a picture with him. It was really cool. That's really cool. And they're bringing like one of the most famous football players from Mexico.
-
I thought that was also really interesting. That's sweet. It is interesting because like. Sorry, Andrew. Did you want to. No. I was going to say it is interesting because the speed thing. There was a moment when they were talking about the A20. And they're talking about how they swapped some of the cores around.
-
And they moved the CPU in the phone so that it has direct contact with the vapor chamber. And I just kept thinking like how much overlap is there with between speeds audience and like silicon. You know, like. I think he was probably trying to entertain during that part knowing his audience was like, what is a vapor chamber ?
-
No, but it is just interesting like how I want to say I feel for Apple. But it's such a tough thing to like. You need to get all this technical information out there for people like us who like do care about the cores and the chip. Yeah. And then you're also trying to make do the general public care about a chip, you know.
-
I think it's for different audiences. Speed. I mean, I think you're right. In speeds audience is probably wanting to know about like the camera or like how the fold works or multitasking or like general purpose daily stuff. But that's why they bring people from all.
-
Right. All walks of life. Speaking of camera, did you get a chance to use the camera on the fold? Yes, I did. There's like a lot going on with the camera. So you can like put it up like a laptop and then you can shoot this way.
-
You can put it up like a laptop and shoot the other way. You can do the thing where you're using the main cameras with the selfie screen. Oh, like backwards? Yeah. And actually holding it since the device is a bit more horizontal, holding it like this with the cameras on top.
-
And like the screen on the bottom. I think that's going to be like the new vlogging meta. It's really comfortable. It's like a Sony like flip up screen. Yeah. Yeah. It's like a flip up screen. And it works so well. It works really, really cool. I'm definitely going to use it for that.
-
Sorry, Andrew. Are you going to? No, no. That's okay. You said you're definitely going to use it. Oh, I guess you're going to review it. We're trying to find someone who actually thinks of it being their main device. Do you see it? Yeah. Definitely. Yeah. For sure. You're the first person out of like six so far. What?
-
A lot of people are like, yeah, cool. Nah. Nah, definitely my main device. Okay. I'm going to miss the telephoto. That might be your main device if you break that on camera. It should be like I'll miss the telephoto camera. I like things about it. It does have telephoto, no?
-
No. I thought it was 12 megapixel telephoto and then it had the 48. It's ultra wide. Fusion ultra wide. It's like the main camera and the ultra wide. Is it? Okay. Then I've been saying literally everything wrong. Wait. I need to double check that. I really thought they said.
-
The Fusion camera is the one with the ultra wide. Yeah. There's a separate 12 megapixel telephoto, I thought. Oh, maybe I'm wrong. We should. You should double check that. Maybe I'm wrong. Everyone says we're wrong anyway, so it doesn't matter if we are. Someone's wrong. We'll fact check that. We can fact check it.
-
I used the device, right? So it has the 1x, it has the 2x, and it has the 0.5x. Yeah. So there's no 4x and no 8x like on the Pro. So I think that's why there's no telephoto lens.
-
Okay. Interesting. It should be the ultra wide, which is 0.5, and then the normal, which is 1x, and then 2x optical zoom, but it's just like the sensor crop. Okay. But it was a bit confusing because I had the same. Seems confusing. On the keynote, they said like telephoto, and then it's like not, it was a little bit weird.
-
They did a lot of that, I feel like. A lot of kind of like going back and forth between things, and I would be like, oh, this is that. I wrote it down. Oh, no, now they're talking about something else. Or what? They said silicon in the battery? Now we're not talking about the battery anymore. So that part was a little confusing. What do you think of the price?
-
2,000. You heard like all sorts of rumors, like 2,500. And then like, I'm starting to think that Apple plants those rumors. Like 2,500, $3,000, and then they come out with the 2,000. So everyone's like, oh, it's not too bad.
-
Because that's what I'm thinking. It's not too bad if you're getting like an iPad mini and an iPhone in one device. iPad mini is what? $500. An iPhone is like $1,000, a little bit more. I mean, I think during Ramageddon and it just being Apple notoriously expensive, I expected 2,500.
-
I was very surprised by 19. I think it's going to do really well. I think it will sell. And it will be my main device, definitely. Because I just enjoy the form factor. It feels fresh. It feels different. The animations are just everything like flows perfectly.
-
You're glowing. I was doing the multitasking thing. And so you open an app on the multitasking. And on the other side, you get like a whole other iPhone. Like if you quit one, the app on the left side, you get a whole other iPhone. And you just, you can tap away and open another app.
-
It's like, it works just really well. They did really good on the software. You're making me want it. It's annoying. Yeah. I mean, you'll try it when you get like the review unit and all that stuff. Oh. You can decide. I'll have to get it out of Marquez's hands. Yeah.
-
Can I ask a quick question of, so when you're not there, you were at the event, we were not. There's generally a time where the CEO will come out and speak to the audience for a couple minutes. In the video, John Ternus said hello and welcome, correct? Did he say the same thing on stage?
-
Because we're trying to figure out if this is going to be a repetitive thing. Like a good morning. Like a catchphrase. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A catchphrase. There was no catchphrase. He just came out and it was a little bit weird. I didn't hear like the first word. He was just like, I think he said hi maybe.
-
But it was like, or I don't know. It wasn't very memorable. It wasn't. It's not a great catchphrase. It wasn't memorable. But he did say something really cool. He said, I've been 25 years at Apple and I never thought I would get to have this role and I'm very excited.
-
He did like a one minute speech. It was fun. And then he went off stage and the keynote started. And he also came out on the hands-on area. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So people were having selfies with him. The same as Tim Cook used to do. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He got on speed stream.
-
Yeah. Oh my God. He got on speed stream? Yeah, yeah. His speed like waited for him. They took a selfie with the camera and everything. With the duo. That's cool. It was funny. So you got to test a bunch of stuff with the cameras, you said. Did you get to use the underscreen camera? Because this is the first Apple underscreen camera that I can think of.
-
It's interesting. I like the little details, so I always focus on that. If it's turned off, you see the whole screen. But if you look carefully, it does look a little bit like you can tell where it is. The pixels are like, I think the pixels are bigger or smaller.
-
Yeah, that sounds... I don't know what it is. But if you look for it, you can see it. Okay. And once you open the selfie camera, what I thought was interesting, you turn on the selfie camera and it's not only like a perfect circle. You get a little bit like a pill shape. Yeah. And the pill shape is so you can see the green indicator.
-
Oh, the recording light. The recording light. Yeah. So you get that like pill box, which is like all in one with the camera turned on and the pill, the green light at the side of it. I am interested to see that because that felt like something they glossed over very quickly in the event.
-
It was like, oh yeah. And it's hidden for FaceTime. And here it is. And then something else. So I'm... Because we haven't seen an under display camera in so long. I didn't really test the quality. Yeah. It looks fine. I don't know if it's like worse quality than the other selfie camera, but it is interesting that they put it under the screen.
-

One, two, three, and to the four. We're back because you wanted some more with... Dhruv. Dhruv Mohan. What's so funny? What's so funny? I'm sorry. What was your name, Aya? Say it to my face. It's Dhruv Mohan. I'm from India. Dhruv Mohan. Great to meet you. Yeah, thanks for joining us.
-
Thank you so much. And you are wearing the journalist badge. Who do you write for? Who do you work for? What do you do? Tell us about yourself. Absolutely. So I actually cover consumer technology and AI as well for the Economic Times. It's an Indian publication. And it's my second Apple iPhone event.
-
Cool. So I'm glad to be here again. Sick. I'm doing this with you guys. Okay. So we got into it and I stopped our really interesting conversation because I wanted to have it on camera about batteries. Yeah. Because we're both excited. There's silicon in the battery. We've been waiting for this.
-
Marques, I'm sure, is just over the moon about this. But you brought up a really interesting point that they never called it like a silicon carbon or a silicon carbon battery like you hear a lot of Chinese phones. Unless I missed it in the event, but I didn't hear it. We were confused. We heard them say silicon.
-
They said it multiple times. Yes. And we were like, does that confirm it? I don't know. They moved on already. Yeah. It was quick. And they said it for both the pros and the do as well. They said it for the both of them. When we were talking to Samsung and we were trying to ask them, like, is this a silicon carbon battery? They kept saying, no, but it has a little silicon.
-
I was actually there in London when it launched. Okay. So during the briefings as well, we really had to get it out of them. But they were quite open about it once they mentioned how the entire hint situation is working on the ultra. Okay. So that's how they opened it about. So, and battery size got reduced.
-
Yeah. They were making the point that this new smaller battery has the same battery life as the 17 pro and then blah, blah, blah, blah, or 17, whatever. Yeah. More. Oh, 17 pro, the 18 pro is more than the 17 pro max. Yes. That's what you're getting. Yeah. So you're excited that the iPhone finally has some silicon in its battery.
-
Yeah. So I'll give you a context. I actually was using the 15 pro and the 16 pro, the regular , the regular variants. And last year I finally got to test the 17 pro max and the battery capacity that jumped from in that device itself. I was really happy.
-
And frankly speaking, I like the charging speeds as well. I'm not really, I'm not going to vilify it unnecessarily. It's quite good. But today what we have seen, especially with the 15 minute charging time that we saw that it can go from zero to 50 in 15 minutes. That's what they're claiming. I think the number will be very close to that because optimization has always been Apple's forte.
-
So I am really looking forward to test that feature. So particularly. Why do you think Apple sort of danced around with their words, calling it like a silicon carbon battle? Because it's Apple. They do that with everything. Actually, I'll be honest with you. I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but I feel that two technical details is something that generally what Chinese do.
-
The consumers that Apple is taking care of do not want to get into that much detail. It's fair. I feel that way a lot of times because I've been covering it for a while and you guys would know more. I mean, of course. No, no. But I feel that, you know, the language is generally for the enthusiast crowd.
-
For example, when Marcus is always talking about the OnePlus 15 battery and everything, that's a crowd. At the end of the day, OnePlus is an enthusiast device. At the end of the day. I mean, that's how it, the inception is like that. But the iPhone has always been for the masses.
-
And I think you don't really need to get into that grammar to explain the feature. That's what I feel. I think that's what I meant by their Apple. Like, when has Apple said a milliamp hour? When have they said a RAM? They have never. They just never, ever do that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Storage maybe. And like, what? The word is optimization.
-
All day battery life. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The word is optimization. Exactly. That's the word. And it works really well. They did. And they did say, you said you were excited for battery. Did they not say this was the biggest battery improvement of any iPhone generation ever? Yeah. Which I'm also wondering what they're meaning because are they talking about base 17?
-
Because we didn't get base 18. So do they get to make the comparison? That's one thing Apple likes to do their comparisons and never really say exactly what they're comparing it to. Yeah. But I think today they were, I felt that they were a bit lenient today because the performance numbers that they had shown was against the 16 Pro and the 17 Pro Max.
-
So I've got to give it to them for that. At least they were very, and the numbers were quite, the leap was quite impressive. Yeah, it was. Duo, we have to talk about. Sorry, I have a battery question. Okay. I'm curious because iPhones, almost to the point of like conspiracy, are notorious for having battery drops or the quality of the battery drops over the course of the iPhone 's lifetime.
-
Yeah. Do you think we will see more of that now that there's some silicon in the battery? I honestly, I used to, it's not a myth. This has been observed over time. But at least for the last three devices that I've tested, we had the 15 Pro, 16 Pro and the 17 Pro Max.
-
I did not feel that way. To give you, I'll give you an example. The 15 Pro that I still have that and the battery health is about 78% right now. Okay. So, and I've used it extensively because generally my iPhones are the products that I shoot with and I travel across with it.
-
MWC, IFA. I was just at EF, I was shooting with an iPhone. So, no, not really. I mean, I think, I don't know. Maybe the Indian variants are different, but it's not like that. At least that's what I've observed. I don't know. Sick. All right. Now we can talk about it. Now we can talk about it. Yeah. Let's get to it. First thing I want to ask you. Yeah. Name.
-
But I have to firstly say that it's very expensive in India . Oh, I'm sure. Yeah, I know. So that's first thing. It's about three lakhs. It's 300,000 for the people in America. Okay. We can't say lakhs in America, I've been told. Oh. So, 300,000. We do have an appetite for expensive phones, and then we do not care about the naming and or the nomenclature.
-
Okay. So, honestly, I don't mind the name, to be frank with you. I think the only reason some people don't like it is because of the Microsoft Duo. Yeah. Now I've said Microsoft. Microsoft's getting more press from the Apple release than they ever had for their actual Duo right now.
-
A lot of my thoughts and opinions come from an Indian context, and the Duo was never a big hit in Microsoft. It was not a big hit here. Anywhere, yes. But in India, people are not aware about the device at all, the majority of them. The Duo name is actually associated with the ASOS laptops that we get in India.
-
Yes. Okay. And that is a big hit, by the way, in India. So, honestly, I don't think that at least the name is going to have a problem in my market, in my country. I don't think so. That's cool. That's interesting. Any other thoughts about Duo? We have, I mean, I know you said price is extremely expensive for you.
-
It is. So, I mean, for us, we were actually surprised it was cheaper. I'm not trying to call it cheap, but it was less than we all thought Apple was going to make it. Certainly. Yeah. Certainly. See, it's expensive, but we have to also take into consideration that the entire global crisis that's happening right now, this is something that the consumers have understood.
-
Because a little bit of more context from an Indian perspective, like you have Black Friday sales in America. Back in India, Diwali sales are very huge. And that's when we see a big drop in prices. So, what happens is that this time around, we are not seeing that trend.
-
So, naturally around, so there are two, three spikes that we see in sales in India. One is in August and one is in November come Diwali. And so far in August, the sales were not really, like, we did not see any spike in sales because of the price drop particularly. So, the audience is actually very well aware.
-
The consumers are aware that this is a crisis that's happening. This is for sure. Yeah. But the device looks good. I'll be honest with you. I tested it out. I really like the optimization. Wait. Oh, yeah. Okay. You're the first person we're talking to that have seen it. Yeah. Oh. We obviously, because, like, we only saw it on the event. Apple is clearly going to make sure it looks perfect all the time.
-
Hmm. Did you get to see a crease? No. Really? You can watch my video. Okay. It's live. It's live already? Yeah. That's impressive. How? I edited it at the Steve's office. I sat on the floor and I edited the video on my MacBook. That's awesome. Damn. Yeah. I don't shoot on red cameras, so I can manage this.
-
That's awesome. Okay. Wait. Wait. Wait. No crease. No crease. No. No. None at all? And the ceramic, by the way, it's pretty good. It is? The quality is really good. I thought it was really funny that there's ceramic shield one on the back and ceramic shield two on the front. I mean, at the end of the day, they have to take care of the front display more because, I mean, let's be honest, majority of the usage is going to be closed up, I feel.
-
I think you're right with that, but also just like the interior screen has to fold. Yeah. The exterior screen doesn't have to fold, so it's going to inevitably be. I spent about 20 minutes with the device inside Apple Park and I realized that it's a very well put together device because they have taken their sweet time to build it, right ?
-
Yeah. They have a lot of context. They're seven generations behind Samsung. Yeah. So it does look good. And I have to say the software optimization, especially the information bar that you pop down, the new change that they have done, it looks really good. Cool. Do the animations...
-
Wow. I have so many questions now that I realize that you've actually touched this thing. You work with the god of YouTube. You can ask him. Yeah. We're not going to see... They have made videos. We, when we were watching things, we felt like some of the animations looked a little choppy and we weren't sure if it was our bad hotel TV. Did the animations seem iPhone smooth or...
-
Honestly, I was a bit skeptical about the one that when it opens up, so the transition animation. Like the gradient? Yeah. So I was a bit skeptical about that, but at least the ones that I have seen inside, they were really smooth. Cool. Yeah, they were really smooth. I love that. And it gave that same sense of opening, even when you're not straight up.
-
Oh, yeah. The continuity was like there, yeah. Wow. Yeah. Cool, man. I felt that way, at least, yeah. I'm thoroughly impressed with the device, and I'm sure that in India, we will be very receptive about it, for sure. Cool. Come October. Before we let you go get some AC, where can people find your video? You can check it out, Economic Times.
-
It's on YouTube, and it's on Instagram, and you can check it out on my LinkedIn as well. Dhruv Mohan. Peace. Cool. Dhruv. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. I just want to talk to you. Thank you. Thanks for joining us. Yeah, yeah. Thank you. Thank you. Welcome back to the Heatform Sweatcast, sponsored by Persp iration.
-
I am here right now with Brett, who you may remember from last year. Happy to be back. Sweet. Well, thanks for agreeing to speak to us again. I'm glad we weren't horrifying monsters. I don't know why this is not working. You got to talk. Okay. Well, I want to start off with, I remember when you joined us last year, the very first thing, learning about the type of content you make was, I think you said you made 24 videos already by the time we talked to you.
-
I think I've upped that. I wanted to ask, where are you right now? We are approximately, what, three, three and a half hours after the event? I'm approaching 30. I think I'm in my high 20s. 30 videos? Yeah. I mean, I don't want to make myself up to be this crazy production machine.
-
To be fair, a lot of those are, what's been really successful in the past is just clipping the keynote. And I've got this crazy setup of like three phones. My hack this year, usually a big problem when uploading a ton of clips is just like bandwidth to get on the internet.
-
If the wifi is awful, if your cell service is awful. So this year I bought six e-sims from six different providers and I have them rotating to make sure that I had the service to go through. And then I'm constantly clipping as it goes. I need a behind the scenes like day in the life of you at one of these events because it's fascinating listening to how you pull this off.
-
I love it. It's cool. It's like an ever longing problem that I will never solve. That's so sick. That I'll just continue chipping away at. So what has been the standout announcements, features, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera for you? I mean, there's the big obvious one, which I almost don't even want to talk about because it's so obvious.
-
It's the iPhone Duo. It's really cool. A lot we could talk about there. But there were two that I don't think got enough hype. One for me is the AirPods 5. Okay. I was going to make a joke. Be like AirPods 5, right? Everyone's talking about it. Yeah. Like it's even and I feel like it's even more so than they deserve.
-
Obviously, it's really cheap. But like I love the in-ear style bud. I use the AirPods 4 ANC for ages until I reached for my AirPods Pro 3 and I realized how good the noise cancellation was. And then all of a sudden I missed the noise cancellation and I missed my little swipe stem.
-
Now seeing that lower price point with the ANC and the swipe stem, I think that like solves the AirPod for me. It almost feels like they're trying to move away from like a pro non-pro distinction and just make it like the same product offering but one as tips.
-
Or at least that's where it felt like they were pushing it. That's what I was hoping for. Yeah. Like I think that could seriously come down to some people just like how it fits in their ears better. Yeah. I don't like the regular ones. I need the tip on it but not everyone does. To me, like I wear them. It's insane. I wear them obviously 9 to 5 as I'm working.
-
I wear them when I work out. I actually wear AirPods while I sleep. I like the active noise cancellation. I usually listen to YouTube videos. And when I wear the Pros, they kind of stick in my ear. You lay in the pillow, they like dig in there. I love the in-ear style. They just kind of sit in there nicely. They're not too invasive.
-
And they just fit my ear better. So since the Pro 3s were announced, I've always said I wish we had these Pro features on the AirPods. You got them. Thank you, John Ternus. Now we're here. You said two things. Yeah.
-
The other thing I think was a really big deal. I mean, you said everybody's talking about it. I've just been editing videos. I don't know what everybody's talking about necessarily. We don't really either, to be honest. I forgot what it's called, too. But it was Apple's basically a hardware version of Synth ID for images.
-
Oh, yes. It's called Apple Reference Photo. Reference Photo. That's what it was. I think that's a really good. A lot of the bigger companies like Google did a lot of it where they're kind of just facing in their presentations that, hey, AI is kind of scary. You're right. And I think this was a really good step towards that.
-
I think the execution of it on the hardware level is really good. I think stuff like that's always so tricky to communicate. And consumers, it's so freaking cool. And the implications of it are pretty incredible. It's going to be hard, even as a creator that explains these things in layman's terms, to really communicate how good and impressive that is that it's there.
-
But I'm happy it is. That's the first time it's come up for us all day, actually . Well, we've been asking pretty pointed questions on Duo and John Ternus. So it was something we were all like, wow, this is cool. It does always have that issue of all these companies trying to have something in the metadata for Gen AI.
-
But the issue with it is, is I think the most people who are going to get tricked by something like that are never going to go the extra steps. But I like, I guess that's the give and take. It is cool that you can straight up just see like, no, this was the OG picture. And that's impressive.
-
Yeah. And it's done at the hardware level. I mean, there's all this stuff on Synth ID. There's all these ways to get around it. Some of them are a lot more simpler than they'd probably like to admit. But I think, again, it's for the lay people who don't even want to know what Synth ID is and that weird edge case where their image gets out there and they need to know the originating.
-
I just, I think it's cool. And I think it does very little net harm for how much benefit. For sure. Yeah. And if they can integrate it with the ecosystem, you know, if you're browsing in Safari, you can, being able to right click on an image and run a verification check in your browser would just be incredible in Safari.
-
Well, that's like you think about, like, I mean, I don't know about you guys. Like, I, not my parents necessarily, but I have friends whose parents, like, you can text them, like, parents are aware of AI and they're texting kids like, is this AI? And it's a picture that's clearly AI. And the kid has to be like, yes, mom, that's very clearly AI.
-
Thank you for asking. Like, to have that question that you would text to your kids just be a right click in Safari would go a long way. Right? And obviously it's like that's, we're only within the Apple ecosystem here. We've got a long way to go. But I think it's just building tools that go towards that and implementing it at the hardware level is pretty cool, I think.
-
I wish my parents were, I mean, I'm glad they're not. But like a few weeks ago, not like a year ago at this point , I got like a really convincing scam Bank of America text that I was like that close to falling for. And I had the thought, I was like, I should text my parents , you know, they almost got me. My parents don't stand a chance.
-
And my mom literally responded with, you almost fell for that. And then the laughing, crying emoji. The tables have turned. And I was like, am I the boomer? I guess what I hadn't thought of in terms of being able to see the original image is in previous ones, a lot of people do use AI for maybe just some cleanup or something like that.
-
And so a journalist might be looking at a photo and being like, oh, this does have AI. How much can I trust it? But to be able to physically see exactly what did get changed, hopefully then less reporting on stuff that we don 't really know about. Yeah, exactly. Even if it's like, and it's so widespread now where a lot of times those things aren't even malicious.
-
It's just honest mistakes. Exactly. And you're just pulling an image that, oh, somebody took this picture of an iPhone, but the background just happens to have been edited to be slightly different. And then it gets posted. Then you get accused of using AI. Yes. Again, it's little things like that. I think, again, some people might think it's not a very big deal, but it does so little net harm putting it in there and can solve a lot of problems.
-
And I love seeing those type of things. Yeah. No, it is a huge deal, actually. I'm really glad you brought it up. You do a lot of home automation. That's the word I'm looking for. Was there anything here that sparked your interest specifically in that category? No.
-
Standby or something is the only thing I can think of some way. So every, I've been predicting it since WWDC or WWDC of three years ago. There is this leak in the Apple TV OS beta, like three OSs ago, for something called Home OS.
-
And I've wanted it to be coming for ages. And the idea is it's going to be this OS that encapsulates the Apple TV and the HomePod. Maybe they bring a HomePod to the screen. They all get brought in this OS. And I was almost certain. If I was a betting man, I would put money on it. This would be the year we'd see it.
-
Siri AI comes to the HomePod. It's this huge thing. All your home devices are connected. Your HomePod is useful now because it actually has a voice assistant that's going to hang out and actually work for you. And I thought we're going to see an Apple TV. They're going to make the space for not launching the base model iPhone for that Apple TV. And it's all going to work.
-
And then the presentation. Yeah. Maybe later this fall. I thought there are still rumors of that screened HomePod going around. And it seems like we might have, I don't know if we're getting that OLED touchscreen MacBook Ultra or whatever. Now there's potentially room for more of a spring event if iPhone base is now moved over there.
-
Who knows if iPhone Air could go over there. So maybe we could see something later. I really hope for, you mentioned iPhone Air, not to hard pivot us here. But I've always been since the day it launched with iPhone Air of the theory that it's just a proxy for a foldable phone.
-
And I think we're seeing that to be true. Just making sure the durability is there. I would love to see the new iPhone Air be a passport style. Oh, just like straight, not folding, just squat. Basically the iPhone duo, but just the half. Like a Newton with a phone. It's like everybody wants the mini.
-
Everybody wants a smaller phone. Have this smaller and slightly wider phone. And I think people would be like, I think, I hope that's what we see. And if they make this big event around it, I'd be. I think that is what all the people listening to this podcast and all of us would like to see. And probably something that will never happen because no one would ever buy it.
-
And I don't want. I'll buy 10 if you make an Apple. I'll put some revenue on the bottom line. How do we get to the long phone? Like that's a remote, you know? I guess it makes sense because, you know, a long skinny device, your thumb can reach better.
-
But when I think of long skinny things, I think of don't look and control. And when I think of more square things, I think of things I 'm actually interacting with, you know, or that are providing feedback. Is this crazy? No, I think it kind of makes sense. I feel like it's almost one of those things where it's like the just what we've been used to has kind of driven the development of it.
-
And like before the phones needed to be big and they wanted to be slim. So you to hold it one hand. So it kind of grew up. It's kind of like the like the QWERTY keyboard layout we have now. It's actually an awful keyboard layout. It's really, really bad. There's much better layouts out there to type more efficiently.
-
But because everything built around it from being typist to hardware to software is just kind of what we use. And maybe that could be the reason of the phone's form factor. We develop apps for it. People's hands are used to holding it. If you want to sell a phone to a device and get a user to switch, you need to at least sell them something kind of familiar to be comfortable.
-
Because I would much rather have a little passport so I don 't have to do that little thing where I can't reach the top so I drop it kind of a little to reach my thumb up there. And then I have to like hike it back up to reach my thumb back down. And we've done this before. Like in the PDA, Palm Pilot, Apple Newton era, everything was sort of more squared off.
-
I don't know if it was the same sort of, what was it, 1 by 1.4 was the ratio? They made a big deal about the ratio is the same on the inside. Adam's nodding like it is 1 to 1.4. Nice. Insane knowledge to have. Nailed it.
-
That's crazy. Insane ball knowledge except I literally forgot about Apple reference photo for four hours. So, you know. Happy to be here. Thank you. Thank you so much. Do you have any thoughts on Ternus? Yeah, I think he did great. I mean, I've been optimistic about him ever since the announcement.
-
I think he's got the background to go in the new era that I think everybody thinks they're going into, the more innovative, more explorative era. Tim brought it up, made it a scalable company, made everybody like Apple. And now we're going back into the hopefully passport size, super slim phone era.
-
Yeah, I was hoping we might see a live keynote, but I know that was probably a little bit optimistic. There was that weird report that Apple's going back to live keynote, but everyone's like, this is just what they've been doing. On Twitter, it was going around for a while and they're like, sweet, it's coming back.
-
But I don't think they're ever going to leave it. It's too easy to nail everything. You need the person. And I think the big change was, sure, maybe John is capable of it, but they've shifted so aggressively. Now that their product line is so diverse, when they have all the product leads coming out, you can't expect what Steve Jobs has been thinking about the MacBook Air for 15 years.
-
He could talk about that. He owns it. But John Ternus can't talk about all the latest tech and the Apple Watch, the iPad, all these products and stand confident in it without feeling like he's just rehearsing it. It's just impossible. Well, I don't think we ever can. I don't think we ever can. I was hoping, but I'm just happy to see him in person on stage for a little bit. Filly guy.
-
Is he? He went to Penn. I don't know what he... There's actually... We know almost nothing about him. He said Go Birds once and now it's... We don't know how old he is. We don't know his birthday. Like, there's very little public information about him, but I do know... Sounds like... Go Sixers.
-
We do know his birthday. I'm pretty sure we know all of those things, probably. Do we know his age? It sounds like we could start a... He's 1400 years old. No, no, no. When he got announced as an ex-CEO, I was reading all this info about him and there was all this stuff like we don't know...
-
You should stop using AI overview. It wasn't AI overview, okay? God damn. Is there like a robot test tube conspiracy theory that exists there? Like Steve Jobs, like skin cells regrown? Whoa. There is now. Yeah. Wait a second. Yeah. We got to get the YouTube video conspiracy thing like where you overlay the faces and like...
-
Yeah, like all red... Yeah. Like, is that good? This is... This is fascinating. Another thing I did really like, but again, it's one of those things that's so hard to talk about in the landscape, is the... I keep forgetting what they call things, but the Apple Watch always listening thing, the summary.
-
Oh. I think it was called always listening or something. Always listening, yeah. It was like that, yeah. I really like that. Did you? As somebody who's taken the time. Like, the problem is the product is itself in its best state of non-malice, and if you assume everything's being done properly, it's cool.
-
It's helpful. Yes. It's accessibility. As long as you turn it off, it's cool. The problem is nobody's going to trust that. Yes. No. Apple is the company to do it, if anybody, but most people haven't done the due diligence to understand how Apple runs their AI, how much compute power they have on board, all that stuff.
-
So that it's so sensitive, but it's so cool, but I would hesitate to even talk about it as a creator, because I know even if I was doing the best job communicating it, people are still going to be upset about it. It's going to be tough. I think my biggest issue with it is 15 seconds feels, like, so short that I would be referencing it while the person I was talking to is still standing right there.
-
So, like, if a waiter is saying the specials, that's what you're talking about, right? I think we're on two separate features. You're talking about the rewind thing. You're talking about the meeting summary. The series summary thing. Sorry. It's like the... Okay. They're very similar. Yes. Okay, never mind. But one you have to prompt... I mean, they're both stemmed from the scary thing, which is your watch is always listening.
-
But they're two food. And I don't think they did a good job explaining that. Yeah. Because one is this rewind, more of an accessibility feature. The other is I think they should have broken it out. Basically said, hey, it's the Plod note pin. I agree. But it's for free on your phone and it's running on a local model. That sounds great. But because they looped it in with, like, always listening, I think...
-
It's a cool feature that I think has a lot of potential, but it's going to require a lot of, like, je ne sais quoi explaining it to audiences to really get the trust there. Yeah. Yeah. I think the thing that was weird when they said it was, like, you can turn it on or off whenever you want, which made it sound like an on-off switch. But then they also said, like, or it just won't do it during night or this.
-
It's like... So that means it sounds like it can be always going on and sometimes. But it does sound like it has a physical on-off switch, which is what it should have. From your perspective, because I'm churning through these butter thoughts.
-
Or I'm churning your milk thoughts into thought cream, thought butter. It's the title of this episode. But it's interesting you said that we're going to need to educate people on what's going on, because I've always been shocked at how fast the meta glasses have been adopted, given that it's pretty public knowledge that what's recorded on there does get stored on a server owned by meta .
-
Do you think Apple consumers, the Apple market audience, whatever you want to call it, is more sensitive than the general average consumer? I think the meta glasses thing is more a product of somebody who's going to buy meta glasses is going to be a little bit more savvy and nerdy and willing to sacrifice to have such a device, because they think it's so cool.
-
Whereas Apple, just by nature, is going to be exposed to everybody. So I think it's more of not necessarily Apple consumers versus meta consumers, but just nerds versus not nerds, which is the difference. I like that. But I do think, again, no matter what, everybody's going to be conscious of it.
-
And again, Apple does such a good job with data privacy in the world of AI. And it's insane how night and day it is compared to anybody . But it's communicating that in a way that doesn't sound, as the comments would call it, like bootlicking or too technical to where it even makes sense to where it's not even worth explaining is so tricky.
-
Yeah. No, totally. Cool. Thank you for having us. Where can our audience find you if they forgot from last year? I am brett.tech everywhere. YouTube, mostly short form, TikTok, Instagram, and then a little bit of YouTube every now and then. So if you want to go watch 87 videos from this event, by the end of the night, they'll probably be ready.
-
The amount of stuff you'll get out before this podcast goes live is wild. I'm going to go edit for four hours after this. Sick. Thank you for having me. This was really fun. Thank you so much. That was awesome. Yeah. And we're back once again, still in Cupertino, still sweaty as possible.
-
And right now we are here with? Vivon. Vivon. Yeah. Thank you for joining us. Got to, got to, got, sorry. I'm short circuiting in the heat. What did you think of the event? Honestly, I thought it was like, it wasn't as like expected . I don't think like they came out with anything too, you know, out of the, you know, norm.
-
I think we all expected them to announce the duo. I think that's something that someone who follows like Twitter and rumors, all of us agree with. Yeah. I think most people would be like, wait a minute, what just happened? Yeah. But yeah, other than that, I think like nothing too crazy.
-
I think. Okay. New CEO, fold, maybe the biggest Apple event of the last decade. Nothing too crazy. There was something about the event that was so like AI feature heavy and software feature heavy. I guess a lot of Apple events do software features, but there was something I felt like, all right, like get on with it to me.
-
I don't know. Maybe that's rude. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be rude, but it's just like the whole time I just kept being like, Oh, yep. Okay. The watch listens up. Yep. The watch, the lights are green now. Okay. I don't know. Is that a bad take? Am I making a bad take right now?
-
Do you think part of that is because we were all expecting the fold and we're all just kind of like, can we just see the fold? I think like the first, like first 30 or so minutes was just all Apple intelligence, right? It was. I was like, just like, you know, get, get on with it. And they, they use the term AI a lot, which for a while they were trying.
-
It felt like they were trying not to. It was very specifically Apple intelligence, Apple. I think at dub dub, they started being like a little more, everyone else's AI is doing this, but we're doing that. But I think turn has said the term AI in the first one minute of him being passed over as the new CEO.
-
The other thing is they normally do these like skits and trailers and like little cinematic things before each product or before each person. And this one, they just sort of passed it from executive to executive. You know what else is different about this one? Do you notice how many people were working in the background? That's that.
-
Working. Working. I feel like they took this cinematic angle of like the Apple executives are sort of like in the space, but they're not actually there. Like one time they're like, what's his name was walking through a cafe while everyone's just like eating and talking.
-
And he's like doing that. That was kind of weird to me. Was it not weird to you? I could see it. It doesn't surprise me. Yeah. I thought it was weird that people were like at their desks , like doing stuff while like that your boss is just like, and another thing I found it weird. I'm sorry. Clearly I'm in the minority here.
-
That's it. Ellis, that happens to us all the time. We're just at our desk working and Marquez walks behind us. That is kind of like my job. So you said nothing was really surprising. Yeah. What was there anything that surprised you? I think like the main thing that I noticed was like the design of the deal.
-
I think like they went with a very, you know, wide passport size shape. And I think like if you look at, you know, other foldables, like the Z fold, they have kind of like a candy bar shape. Yeah. So I think that can be like really interesting in terms of, you know, how you actually use the device.
-
Yes. I think like my main thing is that like it looks like it's going to be like pretty hard to use, at least with one hand. You think so? Yeah. What I thought was impressive is we've seen some more squat passport styles with like fine and one of the pixel folds.
-
Now the new Samsung, the whatever, the smaller one. But the one thing I want to see is, did you notice that animation that kept happening every time they folded from the outside screen? Yeah. It like almost, yeah, gradiented over. I can't, it was visually impressive on that, but we also only ever saw it at this perfect straight on angle.
-
And I'm wondering if it does that in person and how that looks in person, or it's just going to turn into a slow animation. That's going to get annoying after a while. I don't know. It's one of those things that they clearly thought of to be visually impressive at the keynote. And I think a lot of stuff is like Apple shot perfectly.
-
Let's see how it looks in person, which we have not seen yet. But now the camera, the front facing camera is under the, this. I think the internal, the, so it has a hole punch cut out on the front screen. And then when you open it, yeah, we haven't mentioned this at all. It's a, it's a under screen selfie camera that appears when you're in FaceTime.
-
Oh yeah. Cause and I think in the images, I saw the camera there. Um, I think when they're using it normally, I didn't, I didn't see it on the screen. Interesting. Yeah. The, I, I want to see what the under display camera looks like because for so long we thought this was going to be the new thing, but all of them always looked like the camera was underwater, right?
-
Like foggy and did Apple pull it off or do we just not care about FaceTime quality as much? I have to assume it's going to be pretty good, but then that means they would have developed something that we're not used to. Yeah. Well, every time they showed someone taking a selfie in the keynote, they were using the rear camera because now you can flip the whole thing out and get the monitor.
-
So I think they might've realized that like the selfie camera of the inside is just only going to be a FaceTime thing where you're going to be limited by bandwidth for resolution anyway. Maybe that's my guess. That's crazy that we still haven't talked about the hole punch yet because this is the out, the first, the under display, excuse me, the under display.
-
Thank you. It's the first Apple device with that. Yeah. Um, and so it's kind of like a new, effectively a new skew for them. I don't know. I, I'm really curious. We were talking in the hotel room at just like, you don't see that many phones with that.
-
Yeah. It's also like weirdly, it's not at the top. It's down a little bit, which I'm assuming is because when you are talking to the screen, your eye contact will look a little more natural, but that 's all again. They felt like they glossed over that pretty quickly. Yeah.
-
Glossed over. Huh. Huh. Huh. All right. Any other final thoughts on either duo, uh, new CEO? What is it weird that we didn't even see an iPhone 18 base model? Um, I mean the cheapest thing we saw today in a phone was 1199, right?
-
For base pro. Honestly, I think that for me, it is maybe the air pod update. I think I was expecting to see some kind of like major redesign and at least maybe in having some type of screen on the case. Okay. Or something like kind of revolutionary and new, but like, I think like it was mostly, you know, sound quality updates or just like normal.
-
Fancy. Yeah. Transparency. But like. Siri. Yeah. Yeah. I think other than that, nothing that I really, you know, really wanted or kind of expected, but yeah. Yeah. We didn't ask. We forgot to ask Emily, but so nothing that you really wanted. I'm guessing that means you don't plan on picking up the duo. I think duo is not for me.
-
I think I right now use a 14 plus. Okay. And I was actually one of the like biggest fans of the plus series. Just cause like, I don't use extra cameras in the pro, but I want a bigger screen. So I think. It sounds like duo. It doesn't have the extra cameras and it has a bigger screen.
-
Yeah. We'll see. We'll see. Okay. That sounds like pretty hard. Yeah. Okay. Cool. Thank you so much for joining us. Yeah. Thank you for having me. Thanks. Of course. Thank you, man. Thank you, man.

-
It is now the B-cam. And the B-cam is now the A-cam. I'm still Ellis. That's still Andrew. And this is... Michael. Michael. Again, another repeat guest. This is awesome. Yes. B-cam just died. We'll see what happens later.
-
But Michael, we just got done with probably one of the bigger Apple events we've seen. New CEO, new device. Initial thoughts on it? Well, I think new CEO, I think he's pretty cool. Okay.
-
I like the transition between the Tim Cook and John. Yeah. The like rack focus kind of. It's not me. It's actually him. Okay. I liked it too. It was pretty sick. I think it was overall pretty great.
-
I liked the vent. A lot of the stuff was pretty cool. Especially the folding iPhone. Yes. The folding iPhone. Obviously like... iPhone Duo. Yeah. Duo. First of all, what do you think of the name Duo? Kind of makes sense because I think like maybe two screens on one side.
-
Like, you know, like an iPad. But like also a fold. So like a book. Like a pass book. So I think that is something. It kind of makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. I think as, you know, do you remember the Microsoft Duo?
-
That's why I think it might spoil the name a little bit for us. After like one of the worst. Tech nerds. Yeah. Like one of the worst devices ever. So, but I do think the name makes sense, but I cannot in good conscious say I like the name because of Surface Duo. Do you guys think they're reserving iPhone Ultra for like some megaphone?
-
Like what? Like what? Or will the iPhone never get an Ultra designation? Maybe. I'm not too sure. They're just saving the name for MacBook Ultra in two months. The rumored touchscreen OLED. Imagine. Yeah. That'd be sick. So pricing on Duo.
-
Did you think it was going to be higher? Are you? That was about the same. Really? Are we? We're out of touch, man. I think it's because, you know, I heard that the CPU is like about really low. And so, you know, they have to boost it up.
-
Yeah. Ladder. They have to ladder it into other devices. I could see that. I thought it was 2,500 at least. At least. Yeah. Same. So I was very surprised by that. I think it's a spec. It's kind of like Air where specs are down a little bit. I'm going to keep saying that. I'm going to be wrong. And that's the worst part about it.
-
It's like two iPhone Airs glued together. It feels like. Yeah. What else did we see? Are you interested in buying this phone? Oh, yes. Because it is still a, we're talking about it, but it is a product. Well, last time you were talking about you wanted a folding iPhone and we got it.
-
I did say that. And, I mean, it's cool to have. I think it's something that I probably won't, you know, end up getting because I got myself a 17 Pro for, like, an early Christmas.
-
I mean, birthday present. Nice. But I think that it's something that you want to have as, maybe if you want to have, like, as a display, as, like, a tech creator, like, you know, pretty cool.
-
But... Hi, David. We're all just going to say hi, David. Come on. Just 30 seconds. Hi. David Amell, everybody. We can put him in the thumbnail now. Okay. I'm going to briefings. I'll see you later. Go, go, go, go. That was awesome.
-
Sorry. I'm so sorry. We had to. That was cool. Look at that stride. God, what a guy. With a giant backpack. Okay. So, yeah, you don't think you're going to get... I do think we're going to talk to a lot of people today who are probably going to be like, I don't know if I'm getting it.
-
Because I bet so many people already have an iPhone and an iPad. Yes. But I have an old iPad. You have an old iPad? It's not that old. It's decent. Okay. It's not the one with the Touch ID. It's the one with the home button. Okay. Okay. So, I just haven't had...
-
I'm going to laugh when we see you next year and you're like, I bought the Duo. Yeah. Before we let you go, you mentioned that you brought something that you referenced last year when you were with us. Yes. So, let me just... I don't remember this. Get it out. I like that we're already at the point that people are bringing... I got the iPhone 5C.
-
What? The key line button. Wow, it's tough. Wow, way to screw up our white balance. Sorry. That's crazy. This thing is so sick. I don't remember the C being so small. It's very small and it's very bright. Is it... So, one thing I thought was interesting, and of course I'm going to be the one to say this, is that closed, the Duo has a 5.4 inch diagonal screen, which is the same diagonal...
-
Cut, cut. ...as the 12 mini. But I'm trying to compare it to this and I can't. I'm so not used to bezels. Thank you so much for bringing this. That's awesome. You might have the oldest iPhone on... Nope, I got this. It's an iPhone 3GS.
-
3GS, that's awesome. I'm going to give it back to you because my hands are covered in sunscreen and I don't want to. I can slip out of my hands. Dude, thank you so much for joining. Yeah, thank you so much. Hopefully we see... I don't know if we're going to do this next year, but if we are, hope to see you again. Thank you so much. Cool. Thanks a lot, Michael. All right, we have Simon here.
-
Welcome to the podcast. That's awesome. So, you told us that you speak Italian as your main language. On the side, Ellis is going to download some live translation. Yeah. To see if it works. Try to test it live. He does not believe it will work. Okay. But thanks for joining us. Welcome. We had a big event.
-
New CEO, duo. Any initial thoughts on either? Everything new. Everything is big. Everything is big. Yeah. Everything is big, but also small. Yeah. Right? Yeah. A little of both. What do you think of the duo? The duo? Mm-hmm. It's nice. I like it.
-
I like the front factor. It's more similar to the iPad mini and the passport. Yes. I'm really big traveling. I use many times the passport. Uh-huh. And every time I have it in my pocket. And this is really cool. It's cool. Yeah. The size is maybe perfect.
-
What do you think of the price? The price? I see the video too much. And really, it's not this too much. I expect maybe 2,300. Mm-hmm. But it starts to 2,000.
-
It's not too bad. No. I don't think it's bad. I mean, it's still expensive. But I know. I'm from Italy. I don't know the tax and everything. Yeah. Right. The price. Yeah. That's true. Yeah. It seems to be like 1,000 per screen. And we were all thinking there would be more of a premium.
-
So it would be like 1,000, 1,000. And then an extra like 400 just because there's an Apple logo on it. Yeah. I remember the era that iPhone X is cost $9.99. Yeah. And everyone freaked out. Now, two iPhone X. That's true. Basically. What? Do you still live in Italy? Or are you living in?
-
I live in Italy. But now I make a trip to a round of the world in 96 days. Wow. Yeah. That's awesome. 96 days? Yeah. What day is this? This is 37. Day 37. Yeah. Okay. Cool. Day 37. And the best day so far. Yeah. Of course. It's the best day ever.
-
That's so sick. Where did you watch the event? I'm watching here. Oh, okay. Like in the visitor center? I tried to hunt her. But this time now, maybe next year. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe they'll let you in. But come on. Now I'm here. You're in the bed.
-
Get about the cool people hang out. Yeah. New CEO. New CEO. New CEO. Cool. Not cool. Not Tim Cook. Come on. They're growing on me. No, you ask me. Oh, you see F1? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I speak nothing more.
-
The CEO is like Dakar. I like a car. Come on. New CEO, car. Okay, well, hold on. John Ternus is which team in Formula One? Now, if you're going to compare it to a car. Oh, yeah. You brought this up.
-
This is on you. You know, today I come here. I have in my backpack the F1 film to Apple, the Lego car, signature to the new CEO. Oh, that's cool. Rich, what team do you think?
-
What are, what call, I'd say. This year's Red Bull? No, you didn't disagree? Better? Okay, fair. We'll see. Ellis, did you get these working?
-
I think so. Okay, we're going to try live translation. Live translation. Get your Italian ready. Okay. I have a feeling he's got it ready. Yeah, I think he's good. So I speak Italian? Yes, yes. I use my best Italian ever. Perfect. Okay. He's going to use the live translation feature on the AirPods.
-
Okay. Okay. A little context in case you have never listened to Wave form before. In which case, welcome. This is the Waveform podcast. I, for years, have said that live translation won't exist and never will exist.
-
And now it allegedly exists and I'm going to use it for the very first time and probably eat my words. So I've never done this before, but I have the translation app open. I have Italian installed and I'm going to hit start translation. Would you like to speak Italian to me?
-
Okay. Okay. You just speak to me. I speak to you. I think so. Come stai? Oh, no, you do need to speak to my phone. Okay. Come stai?
-
Ti è piaciuto l'evento di oggi? How am I? I'm good. Do you say anything else? And today... Are you supposed to say it back in Italian or does the phone say it back in Italian? I don't know. All it said to me was, how are you? Oh. L'evento di oggi ti è piaciuto?
-
I did enjoy today's event. I thought it was a little bit weird and slightly boring, but, you know, it's fine, I guess. Is that giving it back to you? Yeah.
-
Oh, yeah. Wait, so this works? Sort of. This is the most... The pausing is... I knew it. I knew this didn't work. I'm not... 30% is good, but the 70% is good. Give me something really fast, really difficult.
-
Like, let's push it.
-
Riveting audio experience. Okay. Okay. No, no, I got that. Those were interesting questions. 99% is okay. Yeah. And one is no. Okay. All right. Super nice. What did he say? He said, these gentlemen are asking me some pretty interesting questions about Formula One.
-
Oh. Right? Yeah. It's perfect. Okay. I still hate it, but... You know, I guess it works. There's no way to carry on a conversation, but in a situation where it needs to be... Yeah. Thank you very much for testing this feature with us live. Thank you, Matthew.
-
Was there any other questions? You should... I think... Any other thoughts on the event? Final thoughts? You don't have to have any. Yeah. Next time... Oh, wait. Are you going to get a duo? Duo? Are you going to buy one? No. No. Okay.
-
I like a passport, but I'm more camera guy. I'm... Okay. I was convinced you were going to say yes, because you were glowing about it a minute ago. Siri's just repeating everything you guys are saying in English. Like, it's just...
-
Okay. Our goal now is to find one person who will buy the duo on the podcast. On the Man on the Street podcast. That's the goal. You know, I speak to every guy, and it's... No. No. It's cool, but... It's cool. It's insane, but... No. It's the Benny robot of phones.
-
It's the... Yeah. It's like, that's really sick. Don't know what I'd use it for, and I'm not buying it, but ... Yeah. Nice. No. I can't hear it. Okay. I don't think that's working. All right. Simon, thank you so much. It was great to meet you. Thank you for joining us. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
-
Thank you. Yeah. I'm supposed to be wearing things? Mm-hmm. Peace. All right. Thank you so much for watching. This is another Waveform Man on the Street. Awesome guests again. Bunch of repeat. Yes. Bunch of repeats is awesome.
-
We cannot confirm whether we'll be doing this next year, but if we do do it again next year, it'll be... I don't know. Hopefully cooler. Hopefully cooler. Waveform is produced by Adam Molina and Ellis Rovin, we're partnering with Fox Media Podcast Network, and our trotter music is created by Vainseel.
